Avengers Assemble – Save the Earth

What do all Superheroes have in common? They do their bit to save the Universe. On World Environment Day, I wonder — what is my bit?

What do all Superheroes have in common. Each one is doing their bit to save the Universe from people who are trying to destroy it. They go through lengths, fight battles, develop fantastic gadgets, travel through time, become ants! and try to save the world from falling into the hands of the wrong people.

Come to think of it, given the current situations, I personally feel I am one of those horrid looking villains who is right now oblivious of the fact that I am on the path of self destruction. I am no different than Obadiah Stane from Iron Man — where I have given in to my greed (progress) and I have turned against my friend (Earth) to just do what I want to do without realizing that I am not on the right path.

Today, June 5th, is World Environment Day and I always wonder why do we need a special day to talk about protecting our planet. Should we not do our bit every day?

We take care of our body which is basically our internal environment. We eat well, do our workouts, try to get a good sleep and nourish. But when it comes to taking care of our external environment we do not match up in our efforts.

Nature provides us with everything without asking for anything in return. Just because it does not ask us to take care of it explicitly, we humans choose to completely ignore Mother Nature.

I still remember the WhatsApp forward that was doing the rounds after the Floods in Kerala in 2018 which showed all the plastic waste left by the sea when the water receded. It was all the garbage we dumped into nature that it showered back on us.

We don't need to be Tony Stark or Captain America to save this earth. We just need to be a little more mindful. Carry a reusable bag. Say no to single-use plastic. Plant something. Water something. Care for something.

Avengers Assemble. Because this earth needs us.
