Which Archetype are you?
Oxford Dictionary defines archetype as a typical example of a certain person or thing. I came across this word in a coaching session and instantly fell down the rabbit hole of Jungian psychology.
Oxford Dictionary defines archetype as a typical example of certain person or thing. It also mentions the word originated in the Mid 16th century via Latin from Greek arkhetupon 'something moulded first as a model', from arkhe- 'primitive' + tupos 'a model'.
Archetype is a tool used in multiple places – literature, branding, psychology to name a few. I came across this word in one of the coaching sessions and was instantly attracted to what the word meant. I set upon my journey to read up on it and this is my summary of the Jungian archetype.
Carl Jung the Swiss psychiatrist suggested that these archetypes were archaic forms of innate human knowledge passed down from our ancestors. It also deals with the idea that we sometimes project may not be our true personality but an idealised version of who we would want to be.
Here are the 12 Jungian archetypes:
Sage – The truth will set you free. A free thinker who uses analytical intelligence to understand the world. Challenge them and they will always have a logic ready.
Innocent – Free to be you and me. In pursuit of happiness and paradise. They are your typical Utopian personality.
Explorer – Don't fence me in. They want to explore the world and experience an authentic, fulfilling life. They want to break free.
Ruler – Power is not everything, it is the only thing. They aim for excellence and want everything to be under their control.
Creator – If it can be imagined, it can be created. They are driven by a need to create something of enduring meaning and value.
Caregiver – Love your neighbour as yourself. Nurturing, compassionate, driven to protect and care for others.
Magician – I make things happen. They believe in making dreams a reality and understanding the fundamental laws of the world.
Hero – Where there is a will, there is a way. Courage, determination, mastery — they want to prove their worth.
Outlaw – Rules are made to be broken. They want to be a revolutionary force for change.
Lover – All you need is love. They seek intimacy and connection with the people they love.
Jester – You only live once. They want to enjoy life and see it as a great adventure to be enjoyed.
Everyman – All men and women are created equal. They just want to belong and connect with others.
So, which one are you? I am a mix of the Caregiver and the Sage — always wanting to understand and always wanting to help. What about you?
