Please don’t stop the music
background music transforms from a casual pastime into a absolute survival mechanism.
I am a firm believer that there is a song for literally every situation one can encounter. And I am not even talking about the standard party song, soulful songs, tragic songs or the romantic songs. There are songs on garam chai to Coco Jumbo, lyrics going “Like they do on the discovery channel” or even bizare one like “ Kachcha badam” . I always say “if life is a movie, the playlist is doing 90% of the heavy lifting”
My limited number of close friends know that my music taste is a bit of a contradictory emotional rollercoaster. One minute I’m floating away to a slow, melancholic ghazal that feels like a warm cup of elaichi chai on a rainy evening, and the next, I’m deep-diving into soft rock anthems that make me want to roll down the car windows and pretend I’m headlining a stadium tour.
Because when life hands you the absolute worst of situations, nothing calms my frayed nerves quite like throwing on a track and letting the bassline do the breathing for you. There have been so many times that when I used to get called in for a P1 in the middle of the night I would instantly sing “ Ab to aadat si hai mujhko”
Let’s be honest: life itself can get relentlessly monotonous. Bills pile up, the daily grind repeats on an endless loop, and some days just moving from the bed to the sofa feels like scaling Mount Everest. This is precisely where background music transforms from a casual pastime into a absolute survival mechanism.
It is the invisible open tab in the background that keeps me going
When you have a personal soundtrack playing on your airpods ( I will soon switch to QC 35; No not showing off), a boring commute suddenly feels like a poignant movie. A dull afternoon sitting at a desk becomes a scene of quiet resilience. Music acts as a buffer against the harsh edges of reality, softening the blow of everyday burnout and reminding us that we are still feeling, still breathing, and still participating in something grander than just ticking off a checklist.
In fact, here is my golden rule for surviving the daunting, yieww worthy stuff: before any difficult task, any high-stakes conversation, or any moment where anxiety starts tap-dancing on my last nerve, I have a strict ritual.
I play the peppiest, most aggressively upbeat music I can possibly find. ( Baby ko Bass pasand hai tops my list - Judge me all you want !)
I will let you in on another secret, I am not much a fan of those calming ran drop sounds. Give me pure, unadulterated, foot-tapping chaos. It does instant wonders for the soul, tricking my brain into thinking I am just too sorted to be stressed out. It’s the sonic equivalent of putting on a power suit made entirely of glitter.
Of course, this philosophy extends far beyond the kitchen or the laundry basket. It’s a lifestyle, best enjoyed on four wheels.
And let’s be honest: having that one friend who doesn’t judge your musical whiplash the kind soul who lets you blare the most cringe-worthy, guilty-pleasure pop hits at maximum volume in their car without asking a single question is priceless. That isn't just friendship; that's emotional shelter. Also music is the quickest way to be nostalgic.
So, armed with this philosophy, folding laundry or scrubbing the sink isn’t just a chore anymore. It’s my stage.
When tackling a mountain of dishes, maybe we start with the slow-burn ache of a ghazal to ease into the afternoon, only to accidentally transition into a full-blown soft rock guitar solo while wrestling with a fitted sheet.
After all, if we have to adult, we might as well do it with a killer playlist.
Let me know what song Shakes you up like Shammi ;)
